What is Sciatica?

The Sciatic nerve is the main nerve in the leg and the longest and widest in the body. It runs from the base of the spine down the back of the spine and divides at the knee. The pain is caused by the compression or damage of this nerve.

Sciatica usually affects only one side of the lower body. The pain can extend from the lower back down the back of the thigh and down the leg. The pain may also extend to the foot or toes. The pain from sciatica can range from infrequent and mild to severe and debilitating. Sometimes Sciatica can resolve itself, at other times, Physiotherapy or Osteopathy can help.
